Character models are still a little shaky looking, and your results may vary with the Photo Game Face system, but overall this is a terrific looking game. The sky changes nicely with the weather, and the lighting is terrific. The bunkers are probably the finest you've ever seen in console golf, and the penalty for being in them seems a bit more severe this year as well. I guess you could knock the dev team for the way the tree trunks look if you really wanted to nitpick, but the actual courses look fantastic. Graphically, the game is mostly gorgeous. It's a nice touch, and a welcome change to having to beat Ripper Malone in Bingo Bango Bongo. If it's something that Tiger did, you'll actually get a short video introduction by the man himself. ![]() You'll have four challenges of increasing difficulty for each of the 16 included courses, all of them are based to one degree or another on an actual PGA event. ![]() You have your standard traditional play types, your offline career, and this year the Tournament Challenge replaces the Tiger Challenge as your course unlock mode. There should be a lag effect on the course as they dry rather than an instant change, but it's a minor issue.Īll of your other Tiger modes of course return. If I have one quibble here it would be that as soon as the sun comes out, the course plays as though it's never rained. Water softens the course, and lengthens your putts considerably. During an online match the other night at Sawgrass, a typical Florida brew of nice weather, followed by a short and sudden shower, followed by yet still more sunshine rolled through the course over our 18 hole match. You can select from a variety of weather settings, or choose the Weather Channel Live feed, and play the actual weather that is happening at your course while you're playing! How cool is that? Actually, it's very cool! If the weather changes at the course during your round, it changes in your game too. The final big change for this year is the addition of weather. I played Sunday afternoon, and as I was playing my round, the in game scoreboard actually updated the action of the real pro's. Set on Tour Pro only, and with conditions similar to what the actual course is set to, this is drama at it's finest. Then there's the Play the Pro's, where you actually pit your score against the actual PGA tour field in the tournament of the week. One player I know who plays that way shot +17 on this challenge. For even more of a challenge, turn off the putt meter and do it by feel. As of this writing, there's even a tournament sponsored by the Golf Channel, in which you're playing Bethpage Black, with all of your attributes capped at 7, set on Tour Pro (no boost, no spin, no putt preview) and the Green Grid Turned OFF! After averaging 6-8 under on the typical Tour Pro match the best I could muster on this beast was a -1. There are several levels of difficulty available, ranging from Amatuer where scores of -26 are not uncommon, to Tour Pro, where scores drop into the 50's and 60's rather than the 40's. Each day and week, there will be a new tournament, where you'll get a chance to put up your best score against the best players in the world. A quick look at the activity on the Tiger Woods message boards will show you that this feature is a smashing hit with players. The days of leaving yourself a 50 footer and then nailing it every time are mostly gone.Īnother profound change to the game is the addition of daily, weekly, and play the pros tournaments. It's such a simple change, but it fundamentaly changes not only how you putt, but how much you'll focus on your approach. The longer the putt the more difficult it is to correctly figure, then actually execute, the power on your shot. If you're playing on anything other than the Tour Pro level, you can then access the Putt Preview line to see where you're likely to end up. The meter will give you a recommended strength based on your adjustment. When you arrive on the green, the putt meter will default to the correct distance to the hole, but you must take into account the break and elevation, and adjust your put accordingly. One putter to rule them all is the word of the day, and this simple change has upped both the realism,and the drama. Gone are the days of lugging around 4 or 5 virtual putters with different distances. The first change you'll notice is the new putting mechanic, Precision Putting. With several terrific new additions, this iteration of the venerable Tiger Woods franchise may just be the best yet.
